Acne is a common skin condition that affects most people at some point. It causes spots to develop on the skin, usually on the face, back and chest.
The spots can range from surface blackheads and whiteheads – which are often mild – to deep, inflamed, pus-filled pustules and cysts, which can be severe and long-lasting and lead to scarring.

What can I do if I have acne?

Keeping your skin clean is important, but will not prevent new spots developing. Wash the affected area twice a day with a mild soap or cleanser, but do not scrub the skin too hard to avoid irritating it. 
If your skin is dry, use a moisturiser (emollient). Most of these are now tested so they don't cause spots (non-comedogenic).
Although acne can't be cured, it can be controlled with treatment. Several creams, lotions and gels for treating spots are available at pharmacies.
If you develop acne, it's a good idea to speak to your pharmacist for advice. Products containing a low concentration of benzoyl peroxide may be recommended, but be careful as this can bleach clothing.
If your acne is severe or appears on your chest and back, it may need to be treated with antibiotics or stronger creams that are only available on prescription.

When to see your GP

See your GP if you cannot control your acne with over-the-counter medication or if it is causing you distress and making you feel unhappy.
Also see your GP if you develop nodules or cysts, as they will need to be treated properly to avoid scarring.  
Treatments can take up to three months to work, so don't expect results overnight. Once they do start to work, the results are usually good.
Try to resist the temptation to pick or squeeze the spots as this can lead to permanent scarring.

Why do I have acne?

Acne is most commonly linked to the changes in hormone levels during puberty, but can start at any age.
It affects the grease-producing glands next to the hair follicles in the skin. Certain hormones cause these glands to produce larger amounts of oil (abnormal sebum).
This abnormal sebum changes the activity of a usually harmless skin bacterium called P. acnes, which becomes more aggressive and causes inflammation and pus.
The hormones also thicken the inner lining of the hair follicle, causing blockage of the pores (opening of the hair follicles). Cleaning the skin does not help remove this blockage.
Acne is known to run in families. If both your mother and father had acne, it is likely that you will also have acne.
Hormonal changes, such as those that occur during the menstrual cycle or pregnancy, can also lead to episodes of acne in women.
There is no evidence that diet, poor hygiene or sexual activity play a role in acne.

Who is affected?

Acne is very common in teenagers and younger adults. About 80% of people between the ages of 11 and 30 will be affected by acne.
Acne is most common between the ages of 14 and 17 in girls, and boys between 16 and 19.
Most people have acne on and off for several years before their symptoms start to improve as they get older. Acne often disappears when a person is in their mid-twenties.
In some cases, acne can continue into adult life. About 5% of women and 1% of men have acne over the age of 25.

Be generous with your concealer. "The biggest mistake women make is using too little concealer," says Liebeskind. Start by putting on eye cream—concealer can settle into fine lines of all skin types, especially drier complexions. Then apply a generous layer of concealer from the inner corner of the eye around to the outer corner with a concealer brush. Pat and press the product into the skin to blend. If there's still any darkness visible, apply a second layer of concealer. Set the concealer with a dusting of face powder that matches your foundation. 

Caffeinate your eyes. Tea bags can perk up tired-looking eyes. "The caffeine helps shrink the underlying dark blood vessels and forces out some of the liquid that creates puffiness," explains Ava Shamban, MD, assistant clinical professor of dermatology at UCLA. Soak tea bags in hot water for a minute before plunging them into ice water for a few seconds. Lie down and apply them directly to your eyes for 15 minutes.

To Pump Up Hair's Volume...

Switch to mousse. It costs the same as other styling products, but because it contains resins that lightly coat strands to add thickness and lift hair at the root, mousse delivers far more oomph, says Renee Cohen, senior stylist at Serge Normant at the John Frieda Salon in New York City.

Dry hair upside down. To build volume when you blow-dry, work a palm full of mousse from your roots through to the ends, then flip your head over and dry your hair away from the scalp. "Hair should be barely damp before you flip it back up and style it," she says. (Think you knowthe healthiest way to dry your hair? Don't be so sure...)

Brush in fullness. Using a round brush to style hair builds in more volume. Pick a medium-size brush (for longer hair) or small (for shorter)—the full circle of bristles will give roots a lift as you blow-dry, brushing in the opposite direction the hair is going to lay. Hook the brush under a 2-inch section of hair at the root, and lift as you roll it through to the ends—all the while following the brush with the dryer. Keep the nozzle above your brush and pointed down to increase shine.

To Restore Locks’ Luster...

Give yourself a weekly hot-oil treatment. Save a bundle by substituting jojoba oil (find it in natural food stores for about $10) for pricier hair-repair products. "Jojoba has a fine molecular structure that allows it to enter and fill the hair shaft, making it a perfect choice for conditioning," says Paul Labrecque, owner of the New York City-based Paul Labrecque Salon. Spread the oil liberally through dry hair, put on a plastic shower cap, then cover with a hot towel for 30 minutes. Wash it out thoroughly, then rinse with cold water to seal the cuticle and trap added moisture. "When the hair shaft is infused with oil, the cuticle lies flatter, so your hair looks smoother and shinier," he explains.

Keep a cool head. Heat opens hair's protective outer layer, damaging strands and creating frizz. "Frequently cooling the hair while styling helps keep your cuticle flat," says Labrecque. If your dryer has a cool-shot button, use it to deliver a blast of cold air after drying each individual section. (This also helps lock in your new style.) If it doesn't, he suggests holding your style in place with your brush for about 30 seconds to let hair cool off.

3 Yoga Poses to Reduce Stubborn Belly Fat

Yoga is beneficial in many ways, and these three yoga poses to reduce stubborn belly fat can help stretch your body and clear your mind.
Using yoga to relax and meditate has long been accepted. The ability to strengthen and tone your body doing these exercises is overlooked but is still very effective.

Tadasana, or Mountain Pose
This pose is a good starting pose, as it gets the blood circulating better and prepares you for the poses that help get rid of belly fat.
This pose begins in a standing position, with feet flat, heels spread and big toes touching each other. Stretch your hands in front of you and touch the palms together. Next, take a deep breath and stretch your spine.
Raise joined hands above your head, stretching as much as possible. Next, stand on toes and point your eyes to the ceiling. Hold pose for 20 to 30 seconds. Take another deep breath and relax to the floor while exhaling.
Ushtrasana, or Camel Pose
This pose includes a backward stretch that tones the abdominal muscles. That helps reduce fat in that area as well. First, sit in Vajrasana, or the Thunderbolt pose. This pose is when you sit with knees together in front of you and feet tucked under your buttocks.
Next, lift your body so your entire weight is resting on your knees and your heels should be perpendicular to the ground. Take a deep breath and arch your back. Reach behind your back and attempt to hold your ankles.
Tilt your head backward and stretch. Hold the pose for 30 seconds. Exhale, relax and return to Vajrasana. Repeat this pose five times. These are the initial recommendations. It is a good idea to work toward holding the pose for 60 seconds each time and to repeat the pose 30 times.
Utanpadasana, or Raised Foot Pose
In addition to your stubborn belly fat, this pose helps the hips and thighs as well. For those struggling with pregnancy weight that has not yet come off, this pose will be extremely helpful. First, Lie on your back, flat on the floor. Put hands on either side of your body, palms toward the floor.
Next, take a deep breath and tilt your back and bring the back of your head to rest on the floor. Raise your legs to make a 45-degree angle with the floor. Breathe normally throughout. Hold the pose for 15 to 30 seconds. After that period, raise your legs so they make a 90-degree angle to the floor. Hold 15 to 30 seconds, then relax. Repeat 10 times.
Using these three poses is a good start to getting rid of belly fat, toning the body and relaxing the mind. However, there are other poses that can be incorporated into your routine if these get boring or stop being a challenge. Practice these poses and get comfortable, then rotate in others to give yourself a challenge and keep reducing your belly fat.

messages to the brain.

4Don't skimp on low fat sources of protein, such as fish, grilled chicken
and lean meat. Lean protein has an effective blunting effect on your
appetite, and can make you feel full for longer.

5Cut the fat. Apart from the obvious reason - that it has more than twice
the calories than the same weight of protein or starch - fat is also the
least filling food component of all.

If you follow these rules, you'll be able to eat really well (for example
cereal and fruit for breakfast, soup, bread and yoghurt for lunch and a
large veggie curry and rice followed by fruit fool for evening meal) and
still not go over 1200 calories.
