Get Active For Mental Wellbeing

Being active is great for your physical health and fitness, and evidence shows that it can also improve your mental wellbeing.
We think that the mind and body are separate. But what you do with your body can have a powerful effect on your mental wellbeing.
Mental wellbeing means feeling good – both about yourself and about the world around you. It means being able to get on with life in the way you want.
Evidence shows that there is a link between being physically active and good mental wellbeing.
Being active doesn’t mean you need to spend hours in the gym, if that doesn't appeal to you. Find physical activities that you enjoy and think about how to fit more of them into your daily life.

How exercise helps your mental wellbeing

Scientists think that physical activity helps maintain and improve wellbeing in a number of ways.
Physical activity can help people with mild depression. Evidence shows that it can also help protect people against anxiety.
Physical activity is thought to cause chemical changes in the brain, which can help to positively change our mood.
Some scientists think that being active can improve wellbeing because it brings about a sense of greater self-esteem, self-control and the ability to rise to a challenge.

Do You Talk Yourself Out of Weight Loss?

Diet and exercise and they way we talk to ourselves has always been a passion of mine and over the years I have spoke at length to people about the struggles they face of trying to lose weight.

One thing that always seems to be noticeable is the way in which people talk to themselves.

The word I hear far too often is 'can't'.

"No matter how hard I try, I can't lose weight"
"I exercise all the time but still can't shift the weight"
"I've tried every diet going and still can't get my weight down"

I'm the first to admit that I WAS your typical negative person. My mum is a born pessimist and this trait was kindly handed down to me from a young age. However, something clicked in me one day and I vowed to change the way I think. Over the years I have read every book about changing my thoughts, listened to cassette tapes (yes it was that long ago), CD's and any information I could.

Image result for brain

It has taken time and I am not saying that I am the most optimistic person around, but I have learnt to talk to myself in a much kinder tone.

Constantly telling yourself you can't do something is a sure fire way for your brain to find a way to prove you right. You are what you think.

If you are trying to lose weight (or anything for that matter), try talking to yourself differently. If you find yourself wanting to use the word can't or say anything negative, STOP. Change the way you talk to yourself. Talk as if whatever you want to achieve is possible.

Whilst talking in a more positive way will help in your every day life, if you have something specific you wish to achieve then you have to feel it too.

Every morning and/or evening you need to close your eyes and visualise yourself achieving your goal. I do this in bed. See a picture of yourself as you wish to be. This could be more confident, slimmer, fitter, healthier - anything you like. Really take the time to notice everything about yourself that you would like to change. Next take this person and float them into your own body, feel the emotions you would feel as if this dream had come true. Experience the exact feelings you would get if your goal was real and you had achieved what you set out to do.

Whilst you can tell yourself everyday that "i will lose weight" or "I feel more confident". The only real way to fully achieve these things is to know how you would feel on the inside at having mastered your goal.

I myself use a piece of software every day that quietly works away in the back ground of my computer whilst I'm working, reinforcing positive affirmations to my sub conscious mind.

Take a look for yourself. You won't be disappointed!

3 Easy Ways to Be More Confident

Feeling good about the skin you’re in—and having a healthy body image in general—has been something we hope all women regularly nurture, but it’s always nice to have some quick tips to pass along.
These are our three favourite tips for improving your confidence:
1.) Instead of stepping on a scale, set goals that aren’t weight-related. Ideas: Try to hit 10,000 steps on your fitness app every day, do a couple more push-ups than usual, or work an extra serving of veggies into every meal.
2.) Try mindfulness and being present. Slowly count 30 of your breaths, walk slowly and notice how your feet support you with every step, or lie down and think about how each part of your body feels.
3.) Flip the script on yourself. When you start to put yourself down, immediately take out a piece of paper or your iPhone and list three things you love about yourself.
Suddenly, the imperfections you find in yourself seem so trivial, don’t they?

Acne

Acne is a common skin condition that affects most people at some point. It causes spots to develop on the skin, usually on the face, back and chest.
The spots can range from surface blackheads and whiteheads – which are often mild – to deep, inflamed, pus-filled pustules and cysts, which can be severe and long-lasting and lead to scarring.

What can I do if I have acne?

Keeping your skin clean is important, but will not prevent new spots developing. Wash the affected area twice a day with a mild soap or cleanser, but do not scrub the skin too hard to avoid irritating it.
If your skin is dry, use a moisturiser (emollient). Most of these are now tested so they don't cause spots (non-comedogenic).
Although acne can't be cured, it can be controlled with treatment. Several creams, lotions and gels for treating spots are available at pharmacies.
If you develop acne, it's a good idea to speak to your pharmacist for advice. Products containing a low concentration of benzoyl peroxide may be recommended, but be careful as this can bleach clothing.
If your acne is severe or appears on your chest and back, it may need to be treated with antibiotics or stronger creams that are only available on prescription.

When to see your GP

See your GP if you cannot control your acne with over-the-counter medication or if it is causing you distress and making you feel unhappy.
Also see your GP if you develop nodules or cysts, as they will need to be treated properly to avoid scarring.
Treatments can take up to three months to work, so don't expect results overnight. Once they do start to work, the results are usually good.
Try to resist the temptation to pick or squeeze the spots as this can lead to permanent scarring.

Why do I have acne?

Acne is most commonly linked to the changes in hormone levels during puberty, but can start at any age.
It affects the grease-producing glands next to the hair follicles in the skin. Certain hormones cause these glands to produce larger amounts of oil (abnormal sebum).
This abnormal sebum changes the activity of a usually harmless skin bacterium called P. acnes, which becomes more aggressive and causes inflammation and pus.
The hormones also thicken the inner lining of the hair follicle, causing blockage of the pores (opening of the hair follicles). Cleaning the skin does not help remove this blockage.
Acne is known to run in families. If both your mother and father had acne, it is likely that you will also have acne.
Hormonal changes, such as those that occur during the menstrual cycle or pregnancy, can also lead to episodes of acne in women.
There is no evidence that diet, poor hygiene or sexual activity play a role in acne.

Who is affected?

Acne is very common in teenagers and younger adults. About 80% of people between the ages of 11 and 30 will be affected by acne.
Acne is most common between the ages of 14 and 17 in girls, and boys between 16 and 19.
Most people have acne on and off for several years before their symptoms start to improve as they get older. Acne often disappears when a person is in their mid-twenties.
In some cases, acne can continue into adult life. About 5% of women and 1% of men have acne over the age of 25.

To Pump Up Hair's Volume...

Switch to mousse. It costs the same as other styling products, but because it contains resins that lightly coat strands to add thickness and lift hair at the root, mousse delivers far more oomph, says Renee Cohen, senior stylist at Serge Normant at the John Frieda Salon in New York City.

Dry hair upside down. To build volume when you blow-dry, work a palm full of mousse from your roots through to the ends, then flip your head over and dry your hair away from the scalp. "Hair should be barely damp before you flip it back up and style it," she says. (Think you knowthe healthiest way to dry your hair? Don't be so sure...)

Brush in fullness. Using a round brush to style hair builds in more volume. Pick a medium-size brush (for longer hair) or small (for shorter)—the full circle of bristles will give roots a lift as you blow-dry, brushing in the opposite direction the hair is going to lay. Hook the brush under a 2-inch section of hair at the root, and lift as you roll it through to the ends—all the while following the brush with the dryer. Keep the nozzle above your brush and pointed down to increase shine.

To Restore Locks’ Luster...

Give yourself a weekly hot-oil treatment. Save a bundle by substituting jojoba oil (find it in natural food stores for about $10) for pricier hair-repair products. "Jojoba has a fine molecular structure that allows it to enter and fill the hair shaft, making it a perfect choice for conditioning," says Paul Labrecque, owner of the New York City-based Paul Labrecque Salon. Spread the oil liberally through dry hair, put on a plastic shower cap, then cover with a hot towel for 30 minutes. Wash it out thoroughly, then rinse with cold water to seal the cuticle and trap added moisture. "When the hair shaft is infused with oil, the cuticle lies flatter, so your hair looks smoother and shinier," he explains.

Keep a cool head. Heat opens hair's protective outer layer, damaging strands and creating frizz. "Frequently cooling the hair while styling helps keep your cuticle flat," says Labrecque. If your dryer has a cool-shot button, use it to deliver a blast of cold air after drying each individual section. (This also helps lock in your new style.) If it doesn't, he suggests holding your style in place with your brush for about 30 seconds to let hair cool off.

Do This Once A Week.....

Japanese women have enjoyed the benefits of rice for centuries. The secret of their beauty lies in this simple gift of nature.
Rice is an amazing source of linoleic acid and squalene, a mighty antioxidant that stimulates collagen production. It slows the occurence of wrinkles. Squalene also protects skin from sun. Rice is also abundant in vitamin E and gamma oryznol, known for its ability to protect heart and decrease cholesterol levels.
Unfortunately, apart from Japanese, most people are not aware of these facts. Rice does miracles when it comes to skin rejuvenation.

We give you a super simple rice mask that will smooth out your wrinkles and give you a nice skin complexion.
You need:
  • 3 tbsp rice
  • 1 tbsp milk
  • 1 tbsp honey
Preparation:
Boil and strain the rice. Preserve the water. Stir a tablespoon of warm milk into the rice, then add a tablespoon of honey.
Always apply the mask on clean and dry skin. Leave it on until dried. Clean your face and rinse it with the water in which you cooked the rice.
Rice water has strong antioxidant properties. It moisturizes skin and stimulates circulation. Rice water also helps in removing age spots and relieves inflammation. It will make your skin healthy and moisturized. Use it to protect your skin from sun.
For optimal results, repeat this treatment at least once a week. You will be amazed of your complexion in the mirror – you will look 10 years younger.

Lose Weight For Christmas

Whether you have a little weight to lose or a lot, or a lot it's best not to
reduce your calorie intake to less than 1200 calories a day. This level of
intake will help you shed around a couple of pounds a week (a bit more at
first) so you should be around half a stone trimmer by Christmas.
Importantly it won't hamper your weight loss effort by sending your body
into starvation mode.

The food choices you then make to obtain these 1,200 calories is the crucial
factor in how hungry or otherwise you will feel. To beat hunger pangs
completely, try these fail-safe tips:

1Make two thirds of your diet plant-based. Pasta, rice, beans, bread and
fruits and vegetables give maximum fill for minimal calories, and making
them the main rather than secondary part of your meal means you'll always
have plenty to eat.

2Choose high fibre options wherever possible. Fibre doesn't contain any
calories, so it fills without being fattening. It also slows down stomach
emptying so that you feel full for longer. And because you have to chew high
fibre foods so well it forces you to eat them more slowly.

3 Eat high water foods. Water is the ultimate low calorie, high volume food,
so liquid meals such as soups and stews can be particularly satisfying, and
kinder to your waistline. Another trick is to drink a glass of water before
a meal to trick the stomach's stretch receptors into sending 'I'm full'
messages to the brain.

4Don't skimp on low fat sources of protein, such as fish, grilled chicken
and lean meat. Lean protein has an effective blunting effect on your
appetite, and can make you feel full for longer.

5Cut the fat. Apart from the obvious reason - that it has more than twice
the calories than the same weight of protein or starch - fat is also the
least filling food component of all.

If you follow these rules, you'll be able to eat really well (for example
cereal and fruit for breakfast, soup, bread and yoghurt for lunch and a
large veggie curry and rice followed by fruit fool for evening meal) and
still not go over 1200 calories.

Are YOUR Weight Worries Holding You Back In Bed?

Tracey Cox reveals the three fears that are ruining women's sex lives (and why they shouldn't)

  • Sexpert Tracey Cox says women worry so much they can't enjoy sex
  • She says bad body image is ruining the experience for many women
  • But the sexpert reveals why there is really nothing to worry about

Sex is meant to be one of life's greatest pleasures.

So why do lots of women spend the whole time worrying rather than enjoying themselves?

Here are the top three things most women stress about in bed - and shouldn't.

YOUR BODY

Most women are paranoid about their bodies and it's not just our self-esteem which takes a miserable dive every time we succumb to obsessing about our muffin tops.
A bad body image has a direct effect on our ability to enjoy sex.
Numerous studies have shown body self-conscious women are more timid, less likely to initiate sex, try new positions or talk about their needs than women who are happy with their bodies.

But the reality is most men don't look at your bottom and think 'Dear God! Look at those Godawful lumps!', they think 'Let me get my hands on that!'.

Research continually shows that men in love are almost universally positive about their partner's body.

You see fat, he sees curves.

Sex is about what's happening on the inside not the outside. It's about feeling sensations, feeling connected and loved - and having orgasms.
Lying there stressing about how you look and feeling paranoid means none of the above is going to happen.

NOT HAVING AN ORGASM EVERY SINGLE TIME

Reputable US research suggests 75 per cent of men always reach orgasm during sex while only 29 per cent of women do.
If that wasn't depressing enough, another comprehensive study (Elisabeth Lloyd, US) analysed more than 30 years of studies of female orgasm to conclude they're 'a happy accident' rather than a regular event that's guaranteed to happen.
Yet women still feel under incredible pressure to pretend they climax almost every time and are plagued with guilt and feeling 'not good enough/sexy enough' when it doesn't.
Men's orgasms are reliable and automatic; our are sporadic and dependent on a multitude of factors.

The mood we're in (fat/thin/bad hair/good hair/am I feeling desirable day), what's happening in our lives and relationships (he's being a b*****d again), the amount and type of foreplay and the amount we've drunk and eaten: all these factors affect whether or not we climax.
But - and it's a big one - more often than not, the main reason we don't orgasm is down to not enough foreplay, the wrong type, an ineffective foreplay technique or a terrible combination of all three.
Women have no need to be embarrassed if an orgasm doesn't happen - but if our partners are guilty of any of the above, perhaps they should be!

She adds that men and women have different types of desire that are more noticeable at certain times
She adds that men and women have different types of desire that are more noticeable at certain times
NOT WANTING SEX AS MUCH AS HE DOES

'They're all over you in the beginning but stop wanting it at all once you've been together for a while.'
How many times have we heard this one? (How many times will it be written in the comments section by men?)
The claim: women only seem to like sex at the beginning. Once the relationship is serious, we lose interest.
Some men think it means we're just not interested in sex at all. We fake it in the beginning until we've 'got him', then drop the act.

But there's a far less sinister, more plausible reason, according to research findings.
Men are more likely to feel 'spontaneous desire': they'll feel like sex before they start having it.

Women are more likely to feel 'reactive' desire: we might not feel like sex at the beginning but get aroused and enjoy sex once we start having it.
(Though, again, this will only happen if our partner's sexual technique is effective and enjoyable.)

Both sexes feel more spontaneous desire at the start of a relationship because that's when love and sex hormones flood our brains, as Mother Nature tries desperately to get us to have lots of sex to conceive.
Between nine and 18 months later, those hormones (necessarily) dry up and we fall back to our natural libido resting state.
This is when mismatched sex drives become apparent.
It's not women pretending to like sex to hook their men that causes a drop in desire.
It's to do with the different types of desire each gender experiences becoming more noticeable with time.

What also becomes apparent the longer you're together is that it's rare that both of you will feel like sex at the same time anyway.
If we were all a lot less hung up on sex having to be 'spontaneous', most people's sex lives would be in a much better state.
Put in the same 'spontaneous' planning you did at the start - plan nice things to do together, make sure you both look great, think up new things to try together in bed - and you might just find there's more than a flash of 'just-met-sex' in the next session.

A lower libido than your partner is also a common worry but Tracey says this is perfectly normal

Mother Claims Giggling Has Cured Her Asthma and Depression

  • Lynette Webbe, 59, suffered asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease for 6 years as she smoked since the age of 13
  • Also suffered depression since she was a teenager after losing her parents, and began laughter classes as a natural treatment
  • Enjoyed the laughter therapy so much she trained to hold her own classes
  • After a year she claims her doctors said her respiratory problems are much better, and wants other people to be referred for laughter therapy

A mother claims to have cured her lifelong asthma and depression by laughing.
Lynette Webbe, 59, suffered with the respiratory condition for six years before she started holding laughter therapy classes.
A year on, and she said her doctor has noticed a huge difference in her condition – and thinks the NHS should refer other patients to her classes.
She also says the classes, which involve giggling, storytelling, dancing and childsplay have helped her overcome depression.

Miss Webbe, from Pill in Wales, said: 'I went for a check-up recently and was told that my health was much better and I believe laughter is the reason.
'It opens up the lungs, so I can breathe more easily, and gets endorphins pumping around the body.
'Physically I feel much better and leave my classes feeling amazing.
'I see my classes as a fun way of shaking off the cobwebs. Laughter is like a medicine that doctors can't provide.

'I think it's important to laugh and play.
'It's good for stress as well and if you can get rid of that and anxiety, you can prevent bad mental health too.
'I'd really like doctors to start referring patients to me to treat.'
Miss Webbe said she started her laughter therapy classes as she herself suffered from mental health problems herself.
She said: 'After years of mixing with the wrong crowd as a teenager, then losing my parents and my sister, I got so depressed I started to drink and self-medicate.

She began laughter therapy classes in January 2013, and enjoyed them so much she trained to be a laughter therapist herself

'Basically, fake it until you make it, but you do laugh and this makes you feel better.
'I believe my workshops make people feel amazing. I've been working with people with Alzheimer's and after a class everyone was happy and smiling.
'We dance at my classes so people get some exercise.
'Everyone tells stories, which make them realise we've all got problems and things can get better.
'I share my story as I think this helps people feel they can share.
'People leave feeling less alone. My workshops gave me a reason to get up and go out.
